Last weekend Bek and I took the kids to Halloween Doors and More. It is this awesome event that Community PedsCare puts on every year for their patients and families. It's also a fundraising event. Community PedsCare is a pediatric palliative and hospice program for children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions. My uncle Steve works here. I dont know how he does it, going to work every day and seeing children who are very sick. It takes a very special person to be in that line of work and Steve is so wonderful at it! Last year was our first year going and we loved it! Because we were involved with PedsCare from the beginning of Tyler's diagnosis through his birth and beyond we were invited to go and take the kids.
They had a blast! They have different stations set up and you go to each station and get a treat/toy. They have tons of characters dressed up. Maddy was in love with the Clown fish and the lobster!!!! And Shrek! She would have just sat and watched them all night if I let her! Silly girl! They also had a root beer float area and Candyland where they have oodles of candy and you get to fill a bag up with candy! Maddy was a huge fan of the mini M&M's! A toy factory where they go through and get a cute teddy bear at the end. Wonderful food and shows/performances throught the night. It's amazing!
I have to say that one of the best parts of my night was when we stopped and talked to Steve and he introduced us to another employee, a doctor with PedsCare. He told him about Tyler and how we were the first ones to work with PedsCare in a situion like this and the doctor said that this was something that was very important to them. It makes me so happy when people want to remember and talk about Tyler and I am so thankful that Tyler's life and story have paved the way for other families who are going through similar things. In Tyler's short life here on earth he has already impacted so many!
Thank you for sharing and allowing us to become involved with Tyler and giving us the idea to do this for so many other moms and dads. As Dr. Goldhagen said; it's a part of the program that is very dear to our hearts. There have been so many tender moments with moms and dads such as you and Matt. Some were at the walk this year. God bless!
ReplyDeleteI remember your mom calling me about Tyler and asking if we could help. It was totally new territory. All I had to do was ask and everyone at Community Hospice I spoke with said; "What a great idea. Let's do it." ... and thus a new program was born.
Before Tyler, there was no way for us to admit an unborn infant. Now we can do that. The reason for the change was because you and Matt could not get bereavement without paying. The entire PedsCare team raised such a stink that the system was changed to allow unborn infants to be admitted. So; you, Matt, and Tyler paved the way for even more changes. Others have benefited from your suffering. It wasn't in vain.
Steve
Sounds like a great time and a wonderful cause!
